When the first step feels too big

When the first step feels too big

In the previous text, I wrote about how loneliness can be felt both in the mind and in the body. But even when we know we miss contact, it can be difficult to do anything about it. Because how do you make contact when you are afraid of being rejected, disappointed or misunderstood?

Maybe you think you should be more social. That you should be able to talk to others more easily, or that it's your own fault that you're on the outside. Such thoughts can make the threshold even higher. Then it can help to remember that struggling with contact does not mean that you are selfish or don't care. Sometimes it's fear trying to protect you.

You don't have to open up to everyone.

Not everyone can talk to us about everything. Nor is it necessary. Trust is often built little by little, and you decide for yourself how much you want to share.

Maybe there's one person who feels a little more secure than the others. You can start with something simple: asking how your day was, sending a message, or suggesting coffee. It doesn't have to be a big conversation. A small meeting can be enough for today.

And if the first person doesn't meet you the way you hoped, it doesn't mean you don't deserve closeness. It just means that that particular contact didn't turn out the way you needed.

Small steps count

When you've been lonely for a long time, social situations can feel challenging. It can help to choose something clear, with a clear start and end. A short walk, an activity with others, or a regular meeting place can make it easier than having to figure everything out yourself.

You can also make it easier for yourself by:

  • send a short message without explaining everything

  • accept a meeting, but agree that it won't last that long

  • seek out an activity where you do something together, so the conversation doesn't have to carry everything

  • tell someone you trust that it's difficult to take initiative

There is no one recipe that works for everyone. The point is not to push yourself to be someone else, but to find a way to approach contact that feels possible.

You are more than loneliness

Loneliness can make it seem like you'll always be left out. But that feeling isn't the whole truth about you or your future. You deserve kindness and belonging even on days when you can't reach out.

Maybe the path forward starts with one small thing: staying in a conversation a little longer, replying to a message, or telling someone out loud that you've missed them. It doesn't have to be brave in a big way. It just has to be your next step.
